| December 2006 The pedestrian warning light system has been installed on Tuam Street in Christchurch and is currently being monitored to measure its effectiveness. Results will be posted once an analysis has been taken and some conclusions drawn. Keep an eye out on this space! April 2006 Christchurch City Council have recently finalised the scheme plans for both Hereford Street and Tuam Street pedestrian crossing sites where they are proposing to install pedestrian warning light systems. Both sites will be trialled over a period of time to determine whether there is a significant improvement in general safety for pedestrians crossing there by monitoring driver awareness times. Land Transport NZ has shown strong interest in these trials and has given their formal approval supporting the project. Recently Highways Systems Ltd was accepted by the Christchurch City Council to install their pedestrian enhancement system at Tuam Street, applying Astucia's Hardwired Intelligent Road Studs, to help improve awareness for oncoming motorists that a pedestrian is either waiting or crossing the road at the pedestrian crossing. The road studs will be installed parallel with the crossing as well as down the middle of the road either side. Photoelectric light beams will be installed in the pavement where the pedestrian waits to cross. These beams automatically activate the intelligent road studs when a pedestrian crosses the beam, causing the studs to start flashing, warning oncoming motorists. Should this trial prove to be successful through significantly improving awareness to drivers causing them to slow down quicker, then more of these systems are likely to be adopted at pedestrians particularly on busy roads and outside schools throughout Christchurch and hopefully other areas of the country. |
