Recently Highways Systems worked with Auckland City Council and installed solar powered Intelligent Road Studs (IRS) on Ngapipi Road in a bid to reduce crashes particularly at night.

This road will be trialled to see if there is any reduction in accidents over the next few months. If the innovative road stud proves to be successful, more intelligent road studs might be installed on other hazardous roads throughout Auckland where the road lighting conditions are poor at night and accident rates high.

Astucia are the creators of the Intelligent Road Studs. SolarLite is the particular name for the studs used for this purpose. Unlike the conventional Cats eyes the SolarLite studs do not require headlights to reflect light. The SolarLite uses LEDs to emit a bright light which can be visible for up to 1km away.
