January 9th 2006
Today the trial officially commenced. Each week data will be pulled off the system and handed over to Transfield Services, who will then be analysing the data and providing each company performance indicators. Minor adjustments will need to be made throughout the trial according to the results that are presented to Highways Systems Limited.
December 2005
Transit New Zealand approved an Automatic Number Plate Recognition Trial at two sites along Auckland’s busy motorway within the heart of the city. Highways Systems Ltd is one of the company’s that will be using their system for the trial purposes at both sites. During December installation of the Camera's went ahead at both Gillies Ave on ramp and Khyber Pass off ramp. The cameras provide a live video feed to a computer situated below which is hooked into a system using particular software packages that allows each camera to capture the number plates of on coming motorists and store them on the hard drive.
There are three competing company’s with their own cameras all positioned on the same two roads. The trial is to test how accurate each system is and what further possibilities the system can offer as a solution to ease congestion on Auckland's motorway network.
Should the trial be successful, the system that Highways Systems Limited offers can be used as a solution for improving the management of monitoring traffic flow within Auckland and other regions.
